Francis J. "Bill" Bezdek, Harrisonburg, Va., passed away Feb. 26, 2006, at Sunnyside Communities of cancer.

He was born June 15, 1921, at Lewistown, Mont., into the farming family of William P. and Louise C. Pospisil Bezdek. His beloved wife of 56 years, Phyllis Jane Howard Bezdek, predeceased him on June 17, 2003.

Funeral services, officiated by the Rev. Steve Proctor, will be held at the Manor Memorial United Methodist Church, 9330 Congress Street, New Market, Va., on Saturday, March 4, 2006, at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Manor Memorial United Methodist Church, the New Market Area Library, P.O. Box 452, New Market, VA 22844, or the Sunnyside Community in Harrisonburg, Va.

The family will receive friends at the Theis Funeral Chapel, 9377 N. Congress Street, New Market, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. on Friday, March 3, 2006.

Mr. Bezdek is remembered as a devoted husband, proud father, avid golfer and bridge player, first-rate neighbor, gardener, and barbecue chef, as well as a committed and active citizen. He was a graduate of the Fergus County High School, Lewistown, Mont., where he first discovered his gift for public service. He studied at Northern Montana College, Havre, Mont., and the University of San Francisco, where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in accounting. He first joined the FBI as a clerk-stenographer, serving in Butte, Mont., San Francisco, Calif., and in South America, until 1943, when he resigned to enter the U.S. Army. He served in the European Theatre with the 13th Criminal Investigations Detachment. Honorably discharged in 1946, he returned to the FBI, becoming a Special Agent Investigator in 1948. He was transferred to FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C. in 1956, after service in Philadelphia and New York. Bill retired from the Bureau in 1971, and took employment with a savings and loan association as Executive Vice President. In 1975, he and his wife, Phyllis, moved to New Market, Va.

Bill appreciated New Market's warm embrace, and he enjoyed participating in the town's civil and social life. He was a member of VFW Post 2447, Edinburg, and American Legion Post 166, New Market. He devoted his time to civic activities, town government, and the Manor Memorial United Methodist Church, where he served on the Administrative Board, chaired the Finance Committee, and was church auditor. He has been a member of the Lions Club, a member and past president of the New Market Rotary Club, and a trustee of the New Market Area Library. He served on the New Market Planning Commission and the Board of Zoning Appeals. In 1980, he was appointed by the Town Council to be Mayor of the Town of New Market, in which post he served with enthusiasm until July 1984. He served as an elected member of the Town Council. He also served on the Shenandoah County Sanitation Authority, the Shenandoah County Industrial Development Authority, the board of directors of the Shenandoah County Memorial Hospital, and of the Shenvalee Golf Club in New Market.

Bill Bezdek is survived by two daughters, Susan L. Felton of Fort Ashby, W.Va., and Barbara Bezdek (Anderson) of Baltimore, Md.; two sons-in-law, Craig Felton and Warren Anderson; five grandchildren, Jonathan, Stephen, David and Sarah Felton and Amelia Anderson; great-granddaughter, Hannah Felton; a sister, Elsie Stofer of Bonner, Mont.; and two brothers, Edmond Bezdek, Millbrae, Calif., and Arnold Bezdek, Billings, Mont.; as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, whose correspondence Bill enjoyed immensely.
