Esther May (Smith) Alley, a longtime resident of Paso Robles, passed away on November 19, 2015. She was born December 16, 1918, in Lomita, California, to William and Carrie (Crittenden) Smith, the third of four children. After traveling within California and Oregon the Smith family settled in Creston where she attended Creston Grammar School and graduated from Atascadero High School. After graduation she attended Fresno Beauty College and retuned to Paso Robles where she established the Artistic Beauty Salon for 10 years. Esther was invited to dinner by friends who wanted her to meet Edward C. Alley, from the Pioneering Alley family of the Navajo District of La Panza, and who also lived in Paso Robles. Ed and Esther soon married and established a home in Paso Robles in which she lived for 65 years. They traveled extensively throughout the United States, Mexico and Canada in their Camper and Motor Home. Esther, a devout Christian, was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church and enjoyed many years of membership in the United Methodist Women (UMW), Bible Study, Choir, and regular attendance and involvement in the church. She leaves many dear friends from church and community. Esther was artistic and enjoyed sewing and craft projects. She spent hours making crafts for the church bazaars as well as sewing aprons, baby quilts, comforters, and lap robes for family, friends, the church, and the women’s shelter.

As an artist Esther earned many awards for her paintings through her association with the Paso Robles Art Association. She was honored to have been awarded a Life Membership in the organization in recognition both as an artist and for the hours she spent gallery sitting and participating in organization activities. She competed as a Professional Artist in the Mid-State Fair earning numerous awards and honors.

She leaves behind brother-in-law, Robert Alley; 18 nieces and nephews, and many great and great-great nieces and nephews. She is pre-deceased by her parents, her husband Edward C. Alley in 2008, her sisters Janetta Germany and Virginia Burns, her brother Donald Smith, her brothers-in-law Richard Burns and Reverend Horace Germany, and her nephew James Michael (Mike) Germany.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Justin Davis and his staff for their compassionate care; the nurses of Wilshire Home Health and Wilshire Hospice; and the incredible staff of Brookdale-Paso Robles (formerly Creston Village) who supported her lovingly throughout her stay.
