In 1901, R.C. "Carl" Baker organized The Superior Oil Co.; in 1903 he organized the Coalinga Petroleum Co.; in 1906 he helped organize the first National Bank of Coalinga; and in 1907 he helped organize the Coalinga Power and Gas Company. By 1907 Mr. Baker was superintendent of several oil companies. He patented his first invention in 1903, an offset bit for cable tool drilling. Mr. Baker patented his second invention, the Baker Casing Shoe in 1907. This led to the founding of Baker Casing Shoe Company that would eventually become Baker Oil Tools, Inc. Mr. Baker retired in early 1956. In 1987, Hughes Tool Company was merged with Baker Oil Tools to form Baker Hughes, Inc.
