Civil War -New York State Volunteers-189th-Company A--Enlisted age 44 at Howard 9/5/1864 to serve 1 year.Mustered in as Private 10/1/1864. Mustered out 7/8/1865 at Elmira--Roster NYS Adjutant General Office

Howard, Dec. 25, 1899: Died in Howard, Dec., 21, Samuel A. Alden, aged 80 years, and five months. Mr. Alden was a member of Co., A., 80th regiment, during the war and has never been very strong since. He leaves a wife about two years older than himself. They have jornied together through life for more than 50 years. He also leaves a sister, Mrs. Phillip Bennett, almost 82 years old, but she was able to attend the funeral at the Presbyterian church.
