Loretta Marie Nelson was born November 26, 1931 in New Windsor, IL, the daughter of Earle Clifford and Beulah Marie Nelson. She had six brothers: Stanley, Clifford, Harry, Ronald, James and Terry; and two sisters: Karen and Mary Anne. Loretta grew up in New Windsor and attended New Windsor schools. She was a cheerleader at New Windsor High School and followed in her three older brothers' footsteps by delivering the Argus newspaper.

Loretta married Raymond LaVerne Pheiffer on May 4, 1947 in Davenport, IA. She and her husband had five children: Micheal, Gary, Christine, Matthew and Melinda. Loretta was a homemaker and assisted her husband farm in the Rio and Oneida areas. She also worked at Mitchell's Dress Shop and Oneida Snack Shack as well as doing home care for area families. Loretta volunteered at St. Mary's Medical Center Gift Shop in Galesburg, IL.

Loretta was a member of the Ontario Congregational Church, Ontario Women's League, Knox County Home Extension Unit, PTA and assisted with the Oneida Livestock 4-H Club. She was an avid reader, enjoyed watching movies and especially enjoyed her grandchildren.

The cross on the face of Loretta's stone represents her religious beliefs and the star signifies her being a Gold Star mother. The five points of the star represent her five children. The inscription on the back of the stone are the lyrics of the first stanza of Simon and Garfunkel's song "Bridge Over Troubled Water". Loretta remembered this as one of the last songs that her son Michael was learning to play with his guitar before he left for the army. The lyrics also reflect how Loretta lived her life, serving as a bridge over troubled water for many.
