Margrete was born to Oliver John Sanders and Mary Ann Vidler in Sabine Parish Louisiana. During the Civil War her father came home to check on the family and farm livestock. A terrible storm came up as he slipped home to check on the fences to see if trees had been blown down and the cows had gotten into the field. While there, about four or five "Jaw Hawkers" (men who checked to find any Civil War deserters) came to the house and began firing. His daughter Margrete at first hid under the bed, then she began loading her Daddy's guns and as he was wounded, would bathe and cleanse his wounds. The rest of the family had fled when the Jay Hawkers approached and were hiding in the basement of the Smoke house, which was a secret hiding place. Oliver was killed during this battle. Margrete had a bad scar on her knee, and she later said she was going to the Spring for water with her brothers and sisters and some Yankee Soldiers came along and began hitting the children with riding crops and she fell on a rock, badley cutting her knee. This courageous Southern woman survived these events and later married William Francis Hendricks. She bore 4 children; Elizabeth (m. Foch Alford), Robert (m.Letha Alford), Mary Lula(m.Joseph Reynolds), Francis "Alex" Hendricks (m. Nellie Cunningham).
Margrete and husband William are at rest in Fenders Cemetery.
