Born in Gadsden, AL to Thomas and Velma Smith, he lived most of his adult life in Huntsville, AL and Beacon Hill, FL.
He was a WWII Veteran (1943-1945), graduated in 1949 from the University of Alabama with a Mechanical Engineering Degree. His work started as a Early Bio- Former Employee at Norfolk Naval Shipyard and later retired in 1984 after 32 years service from NASA MSFC in Huntsville.
Earl loved family gatherings, Alabama football, playing golf, fishing, all things outdoors, and he was a master at creating and coordinating games/competitions played by family and friends, complete with prizes for the winners!
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Lecil and Orville Smith.
Earl is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Nancy L. Smith; five Children: Linda Perry (Michael); Earl Smith, Jr. (Rose); Julie Johnson (Ron); Frank Striplin (Marketa); and Anna Hill; one brother Billy Joe Smith (Annette); 11 Grandchildren and 6 Great-Grandchildren. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend to all.
A private memorial will be held at a later date in Beacon Hill, FL.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to the First United Methodist Church Building Fund, 1001 Constitution Drive, Port St. Joe, FL 32456 or Lutheran Hospice of SC, 429 North Main Street, Suite 3, Greenville, SC 29601.
