Chauncey S. Payne was born at New Port, Ky., on August 19, 1819 and Died on Feb. 18, 1911 at Oscar, Mo., aged 91 years 5 month and 27 days. When an infant his parents moved to Ohio and later to Fort Wayne, Indiana. He was married on December 1st, 1850 to Cynthia F. Chipman, at Goshen, Indiana with whom he lived happily to the end of his life a period of over 60 years. To this union were born 8 children, 5 of whom survive their father, two sons and two daughters reside in Oklahoma and one daughter, Maggie Wilson, with whom he was staying at the time of this death, at Oscar, Mo. He lived in Ky. from 1853 till 1880 at Mayfield after which he moved to a farm one and one half miles south of Raymondville, Mo. where he spent the last 30 years of his life.

Though over 90 years of age he seemed to be in good health till a short time before his death when a sudden stroke brought on the end. He was laid to rest in Boone Creek Cemetery on Feb. 19, 1911. The services were held at his daughter's home __ __by Rev. W. F. Matthews. The day was stormy but could not prevent a number who prized him dearly from paying their last tribute of respect to the one they loved.

Legend has that he was also one of the best fiddle players in the region.
