Death of Grandma Baker
Shortly after twelve, Thursday night we were all shocked by the sudden death of Grandma Baker. She suddenly left this world for the better one.
Grandma was born in Pennsylvania, February 6, 1843, and was 67 years, 4 months and 4 days old. She was married to P. Baker in 1858 in Carroll county, Illinois. To this union five daughters and two sons were born. John of Newkirk, Okla., and Ernest of this community, and the aged companion are left to mourn the loss of a devoted wife and loving mother, the daughters having gone before. But few live to be more dearly loved by all who knew her than did Grandma. She was a mother to all. She was one of those fearless yet loving beings who holds a steady but elevating influence over those about her. Many days will have passed before another can fill the vacancy her death has caused. She was one of the strongest and most loyal members of the Christian church here. Long will the loss be felt by the church and community.
The funeral was held at Highland School House Saturday, conducted by Rev. J.L. Masters from Labette county, a minister of the Christian church.
The body was laid to rest in the Dexter cemetery.
Though Grandma's body lies in the cold and silent tomb and her spirit has gone to God who gave it, her examples of Christian fortitude and influence will live on till her life is perpetuated in the lives of others. The entire community sympathizes with the family in their loss which will long be felt.
