Waynesville, Lura Mae Rathbone McElroy, age 90, passed away on Saturday, July 16, 2016 at Silver Bluff Nursing Home.

A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Richard L. Rathbone and Ida Mae Sutton Rathbone. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry William McElroy, who died in 1982; a son, Johnny McElroy;

She was also preceded in death by four sisters Edith Louise, Mora, Genevieve, Helen and six brothers Orville William, R.L, Mark, Dale, Kenneth and Ted Rathbone.

Lura Mae loved and enjoyed playing with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed gardening, sewing and watching over her chickens. She was a member of Liberty Baptist Church.

Lura Mae is survived by three daughters, Patricia Rathbone of Clyde, Edna Teague (Jimmy) and Irene Franklin, of Waynesville; a son, Joe McElroy, also of Waynesville; ten grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, July 18, 2016 at Liberty Baptist Church with Reverend Jerry Nelson and Reverend Gary Putnam officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. prior to services at the church.

***Lura Mae was the biological daughter of Kaywood Messer, memorial ID# 71966793 whom she never knew. Richard Long Rathbone was the only father she ever knew.
