In 1860, he was a laborer living in Menallen Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, although he is in the 1863-65 draft registration residing in Guilford Township, Franklin County.

A Civil War veteran, he was federally drafted at the stated age of twenty-two, mustered into federal service at Chambersburg August 23, 1863, as a private with Co. E, 149th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 24, 1865. According to his obituaries in the both the People's Register and the Franklin Repository, he served with Co. C, 8th Pennsylvania Infantry, but no evidence of that was found, including searches in the 8th Pennsylvania Reserves and 8th Pennsylvania Cavalry.

He married Barbara Anna Miller ca. 1865 and fathered Rosa Ann "Rosie" (b. 12/09/66 - married a Yost and possibly a Braddock), John William (b. 09/08/68), Matilda (b. 01/10/70 - married W. A. Bechtel); George P. (b. 07/17/71 [?]), Margaret E. "Maggie" (b. 11/13/73 [?]; 1871 on her tombstone - married John W. Armstrong), Lottie Pearl (b. 11/18/86 - married Henry Slaybaugh), and Dwight (b. 03/21/88). [Given the last two children's birth dates, one must ask if a second wife were involved, although Barbara reportedly died in 1891.] On August 23, 1890, he applied for a disability pension and received it. He died at his son John's home at the reported age of 79-6-9 or 79-4-3 (both reported) from "mitral regurgitation [and] lost compensation" with "renal insufficiency" a contributing factor.
