He was the son of John W. and Margaret (Porter) Magruder. He was born in West Virginia and served in the Union Army, Co. H., 15th Regt. W. Va. Vol. Inf. He married Amanda Elizabeth Hogan. His three brothers enlisted together at Wheeling Island, WV, in the Union Cavalry. They went through the army together and saw the surrender at Appomattox court house. His children are Mrs. J. J. Payne, Mrs. B. A. Marcum, Mrs. Lillian Crane and N. J. Magruder, all of McAlester.
