On May 24, 1922, in Craighead County, Arkansas, Sylvia May Hartgraves was born to Jesse and Cora Hartgraves. She was the second daughter and fourth of nine children. She graduated from high school in Cushing, Oklahoma, and was trained in Tonkawa, Oklahoma as a CAA communications and weather observer during World War II. There she met her husband to be, Marvin Roe of Frederick, Oklahoma. She was assigned to a post in Gage, Oklahoma. The couple married in 1944 and had an adventurous honeymoon journey from his wartime post in Fairbanks, Alaska to western Texas, by Army surplus truck. They lived in Snyder, Texas for a time, then in Oklahoma City, then settled in Muskogee in 1952. Mrs. Roe worked for KBIX radio in Muskogee in the fifties, and had a career as a legal secretary in the sixties, and then as an adjudication specialist for the Veterans Administration in Muskogee until 1984, when she retired to her home and her garden. She passed away on March 1,2000 at Muskogee Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Roe is survived by her husband of fifty-six years, Marvin Roe, her three children and their families: Kathie Fite and David Garrett of Muskogee; David and Sandy Roe of San Antonio, Texas; and Kevin and Nancy Roe of Newkirk, Oklahoma. Her grandchildren are Joshua and Sarah Garrett; Jeremy Roe; Cora, Casey, Andrew, and Abigail Roe. She is survived by her sisters, Joanne Little of Lufkin, Texas and Virginia Eufemia Miller of Ponca City, and brother J.D. Hartgraves of Cushing.

Services for Mrs. Roe will be held in Muskogee at 1:00p.m. Saturday. March 4, 2000 at Foster-Petering Funeral Home, with Rev. Wirt Skinner officiating. She will be buried at Greenhill Cemetery, under the care of Foster-Petering.
