Named after his paternal grandfather, Alfred was the son of Alfred P. Trude and Pearl A. Warde. His father died in 1901 and Alfred and his mother are found living with her parents in 1910. In 1913 Pearl married Thomas H. Miller, and on the 1920 census Alfred is enumerated as living with his Trude grandparents.

In 1917 Alfred volunteered to serve with the American Ambulance Field Service (later known as the American Field Service or AFS) in France and was assigned as a driver. Shrtly after he joined the AFS it was combined with the US Army where he continued to serve into 1919 when he appears on a U.S. Army Transport passenger list, departure France arrived 23 April 1919 in New Jersey. His service unit is recorded on the list as SECTION 632 USAAS [noted as United States Army Ambulance Service with the French Army], Rank: Private First Class.
