James was raised and educated in Buffalo, NY, and was a graduate of Burgard Vocational High School Auto Mechanic Program. He began working at Bell Aircraft in Niagara Falls during World War II until he was drafted into the United States Army. Stationed in Colorado, Jim attended aircraft armor training and was later attached to the 2072nd QM Trucking Company. He was involved in the campaigns of, Ardennes, Central Europe, Normandy, Northern France and Rhineland, driving trucks hauling gas bombs and heavy metal slats used for airplane landing strips. He was honorably discharged on November 30, 1945, and awarded the WW II Meritorious Unit Citation Laurel Wreath, for meritorious conduct in the performance of services during operations against an armed enemy. Following his discharge, he moved to Niagara Falls where he met his wife of sixty five years, the late Margaret Arzivian. They were married on November 23, 1946 at St. Mary's Church in Niagara Falls. James began working as an auto mechanic at Frontier Ford, where he later became the service manager. He went on to work as the service manager at Lammerts Cadillac and Buick, Inc. until his retirement in 1989.
James was a longtime faithful member of St. Sarkis Armenian Apostolic Church in Niagara Falls. A pillar of the Church, he played a vital role of all in all aspects including serving as past president and treasurer of the Parish Council, as well as chairman and bartender of the annual Parish picnic. He was an avid golfer, and in his younger years, built stock cars for Ransomville Speedway. Above all, James enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.. Mr. Barbato is survived by his two daughters, Carol Barbato-Kreps and Deborah Barbato, both of Niagara Falls, NY; and was predeceased by one son, Mark Russell Barbato. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Lisa Weaver of North Carolina, Annmarie Kreps and Mark James Barbato both of Niagara Falls, NY; five great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Gregory, Courtney, Ben and Ethan; one niece, one nephew an several cousins. He was also predeceased by two great-grandchildren, Tony and Olivia Weaver..
