George Washington was the eldest son of John and Jane "York" Mordecai. He married Julia Ann West, daughter of William H. and Sarah West. They became the parents of three children, a son and two daughters. George enlisted in the C.S.A. on May 3, 1862 in Fayette [now Lamar] County, AL by Capt. John J. Winston. He received a $50 bounty for enlisting. He was a Private in CO. F, 38th Regiment of Alabama Infantry. He came home on furlough twice before he was captured March 16, 1864 at the Battle of Resaca, GA by Union forces. He was sent to Nashville, then Louisville, then received at the military prison in Alton, IL. He remained at Alton until his death from pneumonia and was buried at the Confederate Cemetery there.
George Washington is listed as "JAMES W. MORDECAI" on the Alton, Illinois Civil War Prisoners Web-site. It states he died of "Debility".
