Note: Thomas went by the name "Joshua" because he was so often mistaken for his brother, Joshua, to whom he bore a strong resemblance. When he was seven, his parents parted. He ran away when he was 13 and hired out to several people in the area: Eli Shepard; Elliott Killion; a Mr. Emison, for whom he fed cattle; and finally to a coal miner (per F.A.G. contributor Mary Bateman).

Per his Death Certificate, Joshua died from carcinoma of the face. He was a coal miner. He was a son of James Bateman and Malinda Hubbs.

He married Lora J. Jones on March 2, 1902 in Knox County, Indiana. Joshua and Lora had three sons, Albert, Ralph, and Carl.
