Abia B. Thorn had a long, prominent public life in Brooklyn and was highly esteemed in business and official circles. Born in New York City, he moved to Brooklyn in 1854 into its First Ward and immediately became active in the affairs of the City. He was a merchant in NYC for many years and subsequently became the local representative of a fire insurance company. In his early manhood, he was Foreman of Atlantic Hose Company of the Brooklyn Volunteer Fire Department and was one of the Department's commissioners. In 1868 in became the Alderman for the First Ward and served two terms. Police Commissioner Rodney C. Ward appointed Mr. Thorn Fire Marshal in July 1870. He served in that capacity until 1875 being replaced by Patrick Keady and was subsequently re-appointed after Mr. Keady's departure.

Mr. Thorn was an expert accountant and held that position in the office of the Commissioners of Accounts for three years until the time of his death.

He was a member of Anglo-Saxon Lodge, F. and A. M. and of the Society of Old Brooklynites. For many years he was active in the Sands Street M.E. Church and later the First Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Thorn died at his home at 127 Livingston Street from appendicitis after a week's illness.
