Obituary of Richard Kennell

Formerly of LaFargeville, NY


Richard Joseph Kennell, 88, formerly of LaFargeville, died July 26, 2016 at Maplewood Campus in Canton, NY, where he was a resident since June of 2013.


Born July 30, 1927, he was a son of the late Jonas & Mariam (Farney) Kennell. On September 27, 1947, he married Phyllis D. Osborne at the Beaver Falls United Methodist Church.


Mr. Kennell retired from dairy farming at the H. Ben Mitchell Farm in LaFargeville. After retirement he worked as a caretaker for Richard McSherry on Dingman’s Point in Alexandria Bay. He had also worked for the George Cook Farm and drove tractor trailer in his earlier years.


He enjoyed fishing, his hobby farm and just being in the great outdoors. Most of all he enjoyed being next to his wife, ”Philly”, holding her hand.


Richard was a WWII Veteran, serving as a 61st Construction Battalion Seabee in the Philippines. During his time in uniform, he earned the WWII Victory Medal, the American Theatre Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Medal and the Honorable Service Lapel Pin. He was honorably discharged from the Navy on July 1, 1946. In June of 2014, he went to Washington, D.C. on an Honor Flight. During the visit, he was able to visit the World War II Memorial.


Richard was a lifetime member of the American Legion in LaFargeville, where he served as Commander for two years, and was also a member of the VFW in Watertown.


Mr. Kennell is survived by his beloved wife, Phyllis of Maplewood Campus, Canton; his three daughters, Brenda Kennell Jones of Canton, Cindy Kennell of Clayton and Judy Kennell Richardson of Las Vegas, NV. He will also be remembered by two grandsons, Jeff and Robert Jones and a granddaughter, Tina Glywa-Peters of Everett, WA.


The family will receive friends on Friday, August 5th from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Lawrence Funeral Home, 21 Park Street, Canton. A memorial service will be held immediately following at 12:15 PM with Lay Minister Frank Carter officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Beaver Falls Cemetery, Beaver Falls, NY.
