Leona R. Newman died Tuesday, June 27, at the Hillaire Care Center in Hillsboro following a brief illness. She was 86.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday, July 5, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the St. Bede's Episcopal Church, 1609 Elm Street, Forest Grove. Fr. William Ellis, Jr., vicar of the church will officiate. Private inurnment rites will follow at the family plot in the Trinity Church Cemetery in New York, N.Y.
Newman was born Aug. 7, 1902, in Rochester, N.Y. She was raised and educated in Rochester. She married Bernard C. Newman July 29, 1926, in Rochester. Her husband was an Episcopal minister and they served in several Episcopal congregations in Pennsylvania. They moved to New York City where her husband served with the Trinity Episcopal Church. In 1968, they retired and moved to Wyckoff, N.J.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Newman, in 1984 after celebrating over 57 years of marriage. In 1987, she moved to Forest Grove to be near her daughter and family.
She was raised in the Episcopal Church and while in Forest Grove she attended the St. Bede's Episcopal Church.
Survivors include her son Bernard C. Newman Jr. and his wife Nancy of Pittsburgh, Pa.; daughter Mary Jo Pellow and her husband Roger of Forest Grove; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Remembrances may be contributions in her name to the St. Bede's Episcopal Church Memorial Fund. Fuiten-Rose Mortuary Chapel in Forest Grove handled the funeral arrangements.
