He was a student at Wittenberg College in Springfield, Ohio, a Lutheran institution where he was a member of the Excelsior Literary Society. He graduated in 1856 as Valedictorian, amd received a master's degree in 1859 because he had studied and graduated from McCormick Theo. Seminary (Presbyerian). He was a teacher at Chicago Lutheran Theo Seminary in 1861. He was ordained in 1862 and became a Presbyerian Clergyman. In 1876 Wittenberg bestowed an honorary degree, Doctor of Divinity on him.
Samuel was notable as the Founder, president of Occidental College in California in 1887. Later he was President of Long Beach Chautauqua, and President of the Academy of Art and Design in Lost Angeles he served both the Lutheran and Presbyterian denominations.
Samuel lived in Rochelle and Mendota, Illinois; Clinton, Iowa, Lincoln, Nebraska, Kansas City, Missouri, and went to Lost Angeles, California in 1895.
Samuel is buried near his father; and two sisters, Elizabeth and Mary Jane are also buried at this cemetery.

Death of Rev. Dr. S. H. Weller
Many of the citizens of Camdeu will remember the visit of Rev. S. H. Weller, D. D., who preached for his brother over Sabbath last July. He died in California, April 5th. Dr. Weller was well and favorably known for many years throughout the West. he was the founder and first President of Occidental College, Lost Angeles, Cal., President also of the Ladies' College, Independence, Mo., and for long periods held prominent pastorate in Illinois and Iowa. he leaves a wife and two sons, who are now in College.
