Mayme Lee (Odom) Caver 1919 - 2016

Those with a knack for growing things are said to have a green thumb. But some of those thumbs are even greener than the others. Mayme Caver's could best be described as forest green as she could seemingly grow anything, and often did. Gardening was her favorite pastime, but her nurturing care was also greatly felt by both family and friends — and will be greatly missed, too.

Mayme Caver passed away July 25, 2016 in Austin, Texas, and with little doubt the gardens of Heaven are already more lush. Caver was born April 22, 1919 in Jonesboro, Louisiana to Charles J. and Alice (Avery) Odom. She was the youngest of seven children — three sisters (Ethel, Gladys, and Daisy) and three brothers (Royce, Everett, and Grady). She spent her early years on her parents' farm near Weston, La. Her family moved to Ruston, La. during her teen years where Mayme attended Ruston High School, and then Louisiana Polytechnic Institute — now known as Louisiana Tech University.

In 1940, Mayme married Thomas Frederick Caver, Sr. Shortly after World War II, the couple moved to Fort Worth, Texas where Mayme began her career with the Fort Worth District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and later with the General Services Administration.

When not keeping her federal offices in order or raising her son, Mayme also enjoyed travelling. She especially liked visiting different parts of Europe, and saw most of it. She was also a voracious reader and was usually much happier with a book or magazine than whatever might be showing on TV. And, when not maintaining the flowers and plants in her own yard, Mayme enjoyed volunteering at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden.

In 2008, Mayme moved to Austin, Texas to live out the remainder of her life closer to family. Mayme Caver is survived by her son, Thomas Frederick Caver, Jr. and daughter-in-law, Linda Bauer Caver of Austin, Texas; grandsons Thomas Frederick Caver, III of Houston, Texas (and wife, Amber), and Russell Louis Caver of Austin, Texas (and wife, Bonnie); great grandchildren, Alyssa Leigh Caver and Andrew Joseph Caver of Houston, Texas, and Landry Russell Caver and Hogan Louis Caver of Austin, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Temple Baptist Church in Ruston, Louisiana on Saturday, August 20th.
