Mary Davis was the eldest daughter of James Davis (1797-1870) and Catharine Smith (1798-1873). Her siblings were: Henry Reed Davis 1830, William Coonett Davis 1832, Welthy Davis 1834, Frances Ann Davis 1836 and Guilford Dudley Davis 1842.

Mary Davis married first James B. Baker on July 5, 1848 in Ripley, Indiana. He was the son of Andrew D. Baker (1797-1887) and Nancy Anna Bryant (1794-1861). Mary and James Baker had five sons:
