Killed in action against Red Cloud and his Lakota during the Battle of Platte River Bridge. He was originally buried near the place where he fell, but a year later members of his company disinterred and escorted his body east to be buried in the family plot in Ohio. The small army post where he was stationed, Platte Bridge Station, was renamed Fort Caspar in his honor. The army used his first name because Fort Collins had already been named for his father, also an army officer. The present day city of Casper, Wyoming is named for him, though Caspar is the correct spelling of his name. There is a cenotaph for him in Wyoming at memorial #34447752.
