Clarence Mathias Tschakert, son of Frank and Anna (Flemming) Tschakert was born on October 11, 1918 on a farm near Florence, SD. He graduated from Florence High School. Clarence and Everett Tschakert started farming the Tschakert farm in 1936. On November 15, 1941 he married Iona H. Strohfus in Henry, South Dakota and they farmed near Florence.
He was a member of the Blessed Sacrament Church, served as a Phipp's Township Supervisor, and was a 4-H leader. He received several awards for soil conservation for planting trees and terracing his farm. In 1990, Clarence was presented the Century Farm Award in recognition of his farm having been in the same family for over 100 years. Upon retiring from farming, Clarence turned his love for planting and harvesting to gardening. Many family members, friends and neighbors have enjoyed the fruits of his labors.
Clarence was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Everett and Don; three sisters, Genevieve, Esther and one infant sister.
He is survived by his wife Iona Tschakert of Florence; five daughters, JoAnn (Ed) Wegner of Rapid City, Carol Tschakert of Fargo, ND, Ardelle (Doug) Fosheim of Huron, Jeanette (Robert) Mack of Watertown, and Darlene (John) Wagner of Westerville, OH; four sons, Lyle (Bette) Tschakert, Frank (Sheila) Tschakert, Delbert (Kay) Tschakert all of Florence, and LaVerne (JoAnn) Tschakert of Milbank; one sister, Evelyn Maag of Florence; one brother, Willard (Mary) Tschakert of Florence; 16 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.
Surivors also include a niece, Janice Koslowski-Dickhaut of Rockham, SD, whom Clarence and Iona Tschakert had also raised since Janice was a small child.
