March 17, 1875. whereas exaggerated reports have become public in regard to the existence of small-pox in Oxford, we, the undersigned, resident physicians, deem it advisable to give a brief statement of facts: Small-pox was brought to Oxford by Mr. L. Potier; he came sick, and remained three or four days. While at the depot a great many negroes were exposed. Mr. J. Couey roomed with him while on his stay in Oxford. Mr. Couey was taken sick about the first week of March, and lived near two weeks; he was nursed during his entire sickness by Mrs. Gillispie and daughters, and Mr. Geo. Morris, and attended daily (twice) by Dr. Robt. Watkins. After his death, the town authorities purchased a neat coffin, procured white men, had him washed and dressed and buried as decently as circumstances permitted. This is the only case that has occurred among the whites. There are now, among the negroes, ten cases of small-pox and four of variloid [sic - varioloid]. These cases are principally in two families. There has been but one death among the negroes. Two and a half miles south of Oxford there are three cases of small-pox and two of varioloid, all in the same family. The town authorities have established a Pest House, and procured competent nurses for the protection of its citizens and comfort of the sick, and as new cases occur they are sent out.
