Owen Russell Beede enlisted in the Marine Corps 20 April, 1940 from Des Moines, Iowa. Completed recruit training at the Recruit Depot, MCB San Diego, CA. 22 June, 1940 assigned to A Company, 1st Battalion, 6th Marines, MCB Camp Elliott, CA. 16 September, 1940 promoted to Private First Class.

1 November, 1940 assigned to I Company, 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines. 31 May 1941 embarked the USS William P Biddle (APA-8) at San Diego for movement overseas. 7 July, 1941 arrived at Reykjavik, Iceland. 31 January, 1942 embarked USS Manargo (AP-20). 11 February, 1942 arrived Brooklyn, New York. 14 February, 1942 at MCB Camp Elliott. Given 14 day furlough. 1 March, 1942 assigned to B Company, 1st Battalion, 9th Marines (Rein), MCB Camp Elliott. 11 April, 1942 promoted to Sergeant. 20 August, 1942 moved to MCB Camp Pendleton as part of the 3rd Marine Division.

23 January, 1943 embarked the USS Mount Vernon (AP-22) at San Diego for movement overseas. 5 February, 1943 arrived at Auckland, New Zealand based at Cape Paerata. 15 April, 1943 promoted to Platoon Sergeant. 29 June, 1943 embarked USS George Clymer (APA-27). 6 July, 1943 landed on Guadalcanal based at Camp Tetere. 12 August, 1943 promoted to Gunnery Sergeant.

18 October 1943 embarked USS Crescent City (APA-21). 21-25 October, 1943 landing rehearsals at Efate, New Hebrides. 1 November, 1943 landed on Red Beach Three Bougainville D-Day and participated in combat operations until 27 December, 1943. 28 December, 1943 embarked Naval Vessel. 30 December, 1943 arrived at Camp Tetere, Guadalcanal.

2 June, 1944 embarked Naval Vessel. 10 June-17 July, 1944 at sea and at anchor in the Marshalls. 21 July, 1944 landed Blue Beach Guam D-day and participated in combat operations until 10 August, 1944. 19 August-30 October, 1944 actively engaged in patrolling against Japanese Forces. During September, 1944 accepted a Field Commission as a 2nd Lieutenant.

8 February, 1945 embarked USS Fayette (APA-43). 17 February, 1945 left the Marianas. 19 February 1945 off shore reserves during D-Day landings at Iwo Jima. 24 February, 1945 landed Yellow Beach Iwo Jima and participated in combat operations until Killed in Action 6 March, 1945

Next of Kin: Wife, Mrs Alice L Beede, Victoria Hotel, Des Moines, Iowa. Parents, Mr Alonzo H Beede (1885-1939)and Mrs Jesse R Beede.

Initially buried in the 3rd Marine Division Cemetery on Iwo Jima.

1948 returned to the US for permanent burial in Maple Row Cemetery, Kellerton, Iowa.
