Gillis was just a very young school boy when he was struck down with pneumonia at only six years of age. He died in his Mothers arms (Gertrude F. [Dunlap] Phillips)by the fire place she was trying to keep him warm. Dr. White of Jay listed the cause of death as odema of the lungs. This must have been devastating for his Mother, Father Rufus "Price" Phillips, sister Dorothy Pauline [Phillips] Givens, grand parents Martha & Isham Dunlap and Uncle Eli "Bud" Phillips, & Uncle Lummie C. Phillips plus other close relatives. Gillis was also survived by a younger brother Woodrow Wilson "Pete" Phillips. Gillis family is all buried at the Bethel Baptist Cemetery near Robertsdale, AL in Baldwin County.
