Rebecca Lee Miles, 56, died June 22, 2012, at her home in Gunnison, surrounded by her family. Becky was born Dec. 10, 1955, in Minneapolis, Minn., to Melvin R. and Lenore M. Fossum. They moved to Buena Vista in 1967 with sister. Becky graduated from Buena Vista High School in 1973.

She attended a community college in Colorado Springs and then moved to Germany for three years, working at a military post office as a civilian, and traveled around Europe. Becky later moved to Denver, working for RTD and City Corp. In 1986, she and her husband, James I. Miles, decided to move to Gunnison, where they raised their three children. She worked for the Gunnison County Sheriffs Department. She was also an emergency foster parent. Becky volunteered extensive hours for the Gunnison Volunteer Fire Department by providing meals and helping with after-hour functions. In June of 1997 she became a Peace Officer Standards and Training certified law enforcement officer. Becky retired in May 2012 from the sheriff’s department after 23 years of service.

The most important thing in Becky’s life was spending time with family and friends, from being a Girl Scout leader, to weekends out on Blue Mesa Reservoir or the many adventures that were taken with her family to Mexico, California, Washington, Oregon, Las Vegas and Colorado.

Rebecca is survived by her husband, children and their spouses and children; all of Gunnison. She is also survived by her sister, aunt, mother- and father-in-law;all of Gunnison; brothers- and sisters-in-law; and nieces, nephews and many more extended-family members.

Services will be Saturday, June 30, at 2 p.m. at the Fred Fields Western Heritage Center (multi-purpose building). A celebration of her life will also be held at that location. In lieu of donations may be made to the Gunnison Hospice, 120 N. Boulevard, Gunnison, CO 81230.
