Brigadier Arthur Francis Fisher CBE, DSO
Born in 1899, educated at Wellington College, he was first commissioned in the Royal Artillery in 1918; and served in France, where he was Mentioned in Despatches. In 1929 he transferred to the 12th Lancers, and joined them in Egypt as a Captain. In 1935 he went off to the Staff College, and from there to various staff appointments, becoming a Lieut. Colonel in 1939. In 1940 he was given command of the East Riding Yeomanry, in England, and the following year he was appointed to command the 2nd Armoured Brigade, in the Western Desert. In this capacity he served with distinction throughout the campaign, until final victory at Tunis, and for a period was acting commander of 1st Armoured Division. He was awarded the DSO in 1943. He went on to be Brigadier RAC 2nd Army, and later to the War Office and the Ministry of Supply, in appointments concerned with armoured vehicles. He was made a CBE in 1945. When he retired he became an active farmer in Wiltshire, and took a keen interest in everything agricultural, becoming Chairman of the National Farriers Union and Chairman and President of the Romsey -Agricultural Society, He also took a prominent part in Local Government, and served as Chairman of the Rural District Council.
