Robert F. "Scud" Hooper, 88, of 82 Parsons Road, Campgrounds, McVeytown, died unexpectedly Wednesday, August 6, 2014, at his home.

Born February 5, 1926, he was the son of the late Ernest and Esther (Gutshall) Hooper. He was united in marriage to the former Lois Palmer in 1948, in Newton Hamilton. His wife survives at their home.

Mr. Hooper is survived by a son, Robert Hooper and wife, Kathleen, of Burlington, Vermont.

He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his siblings, Ernest Hooper, Evelyn Smoker, Lorma Harshbarger and Freda Briggs. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Mr. Hooper was a member of the Newton Hamilton United Methodist Church, where he was a lay leader and had taught Sunday school for many years.

Following high school, he entered the United States Army Air Corps, where he was a radio operator for B-17s and served in the European Theater during World War II.

Mr. Hooper was formerly very active as a member of the Newton-Wayne Lions Club and served many years as scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 78, Newton Hamilton. He was also a member of the Order of the Arrow. His Masonic affiliations included the McVeytown Lodge F&AM and the Altoona Jaffa Shrine Club.

He was a 1944 graduate of Mount Union High School.

Mr. Hooper retired in 1991 after many years of active membership in the Carpenter's Union. He was involved in construction, primarily in New Jersey, which included the building of casinos. In the early 1950s through the early 1970s, he managed the Mount Tyrol Camp, also known as the Methodist Training Camp, in Newton Hamilton.

He was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing with a group of local golfers, and even played the morning before his death. After his retirement.

Mr. Hooper and his wife loved to travel and he especially cherished his winters in Florida at Heartland Resort, Haines City, Florida.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, August 11, at the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mount Union, with the Revs. Brian Myfelt and Philip May officiating. Interment will be made in Haven Rest Memorial Park, Croghan Pike, Shirleysburg.

Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Sunday, August 10, and after 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Mr. Hooper may be made to the Newton Hamilton United Methodist Church, 28 Center Manor Acres, McVeytown, PA. 17051.
