Enlisted, March 22, 1915, in Machine Gun Troop, Squadron A Cavalry, NYNG, in New York City. He mustered in with Machine Gun Troop for service on the Mexican border, June 30, 1916. Squadron A was assigned to Camp McAllen, Texas with the 6th NY Division (later to be the 27th Division). Retuning to New York with Squadron A, December 23, 1916, and mustered out of border service December 28, 1916.

World War 1, he attended he first OTC class, at Plattsburgh Barracks, NY, and commissioned, 2nd Lieutenant, Cavalry, August 15, 1916. He was promoted 1st Lieutenant, March 18, 1918. He was assigned to the 2nd US Cavalry ( only American Cavalry regiment send to Europe) and shipped out for Europe, May 10, 1918. He saw combat in France and served the Army of Occupation. He returned to the States, June 29, 1919, and discharged from the service August 11, 1919.
