He became an attorney and married Mame P. Denius on February 15, 1905. They had two sons, Edwin Eugene Hunter (1905-1981) and Robert Smith Hunter, Jr (1909-2000), who both followed in their father’s footsteps and became attorneys. Father and sons opened a practice together in New Castle, Indiana - Hunter, Hunter, and Hunter.
His death certificate indicates he died on January 30, 1935 at a hospital in Henry, Indiana. He was buried in South Mound Cemetery in New Castle, Indiana on February 1, 1935.
