ANDREWS, KATHERINE MOSBY HOOFNAGLE , 94, of Louisville, died Thursday, November 23, 2006 at Good Samaratin Center. Mrs. Andrews, originally from Richmond, VA., graduated summa cum laude from Vassar College (Poughkeepsie, NY ) in 1931, when she was 19 and received her master's degree in mathematics from the University of Virginia in 1942. At the time, she was one of the few women graduate students. A passionate mathematician and educator, she began her teaching career at boarding schools in Virginia, including Charlotte Hall and Stratford Hall. After her marriage to Jackson M. Andrews III, she moved with him to Louisville, where she taught at Kentucky Home School for Girls from 1946-1972, when the school merged with several other private schools to become Kentucky Country Day School. Mrs. Andrews had great confidence in her young ladies' ability to be successful in the nation's top colleges. She subsequently substituted at several Catholic schools in the area and tutored at the University of Louisville until December of 1989. She particularly enjoyed working with the Speed School engineering students in trigonometry and calculus. Mrs. Andrews, a lifelong Episcopalian, was a longtime member of Christ Church Cathedral and in her later years, a member of Church of the Advent, where she served on its Vestry. She was preceded in death by her eldest daughter, Katherine Mesabi Andrews, who died at age 4 in July, 1949; and by her husband, Jackson Montgomery Andrews III. Survivors include her son, Jackson Montgomery Andrews IV (Matilda Wells Andrews); and her daughter, Elizabeth Garrett Andrews Upton (James Merritt Upton) of North Potomac, MD; and her grandchildren, Jackson Montgomery Andrews V, James Chesley MacLeod Andrews, Charles Mosby Upton and Henry Merritt Upton. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m.Thursday at Church of the Advent, 901 Baxter Ave., with burial in Cave Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Thursday at Pearson's, 149 Breckenridge Ln. Memorial gifts may be made to Speed Art Museum, Home of the Innocents, or the math department at Kentucky Country Day School.
