He was the first postmaster and Justice of the Peace of Gallup, and one of the oldest residents.
At the age of fifteen he came with is parents to Fulton county Illinois where he grew to manhood.
He enlisted in the Civil War as a private in Co. B 103rd Illinois Volunteer Infantry which left the city of Peoria, Illinois on the 28th day of Oct 1862.
He married Della B. Swain of Glens Falls NY and 1866, and by the union one child was born, who is Frank C. Swarz of Gallup. He came to New Mexico first in 1880, having first lived for a while in the eastern part of the territory. He settled in Gallup on 25 th December 1881.
