Sergeant Barker Dies On Eve Of Homeward Journey

Mr. and Mrs. Steve Barker, Hollis, received word from the war department during the past week, that their son, Sgt. Sterling Barker, had died September 11th, in an army hospital on the island of Leyte, Philippine Islands, from pneumonia. He had been hospitalized several weeks, but on September 6th had written his parents here that he was expecting to return to the states and home within a short time.

Sergeant Barker was a Harmon county boy, and had entered military service in February of 1941. He had been sent overseas in July, 1943, and had taken part in numerous actions with the 53rd heavy artillery 6th division.

In addition to the parents there are five sisters and five brothers who survive, as follows: Mrs. Oma Sleph, Electra, Texas; Mrs. Mamye Harmon, and Mrs. Beulah Woodruff, Marysville, California; Mrs. Della Kellar and Mrs. Ella Kellar, Hollis; James Barker, Graham, Texas; Claud, Earnest Lewis and Raymond Barker, Hollis.
