John S. "Jack" Bailey Jr. passed away Aug. 12, 2016.

He will be greatly missed by his wife, Sara Starcher Bailey; daughters, Susan Bailey Schramm and her husband, G. T., Matilda Bailey, Anne Bailey (Petey) McKnight and her husband, Mac, and Rose Bailey Jorgeson; brother, William McGregor Bailey and his wife, Barbara; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

Jack was born in Shreveport, La., on Dec. 30, 1926, the son of John S. Bailey and Matilda McGregor. His early childhood was spent in Arkansas and then Venezuela where his father helped open the oil fields there for development. He attended Sewanee Academy in Sewanee, Tenn., and held a Bachelor of Arts from Marietta College, Marietta, Ohio.

He served in the Army at the end of World War II and was honorably discharged from the 467th Army Air Forces base unit in Kearns, Utah, in September 1946. He earned his law degree in 1951 from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va., where he was a member of Phi Alpha Delta. He began his law practice in New York City and then moved to Parkersburg, W.Va., eventually forming Early, Bailey, Pfalzgraff. He worked hard, set a high standard for himself and practiced his craft with great integrity, representing some of West Virginia's largest businesses, but always taking time to talk to his daughters if they needed him.

While working and raising his daughters, he found time to pursue his love of golf, winning the Parkersburg Country Club championship several times and competing in West Virginia State and Senior Amateur Championships. In 1997 Jack and Sara moved to North Carolina to enjoy their well-earned retirement, playing golf and visiting with their many friends in the Pinehurst area.

There are many people who helped provide care for Jack over his last year. They were a blessing to him. The family wishes to thank all of them especially Gail and Donna for all the help, care and love they provided to Jack.

Jack has requested that there be no memorial service. Instead, the family suggests that he be remembered by a memorial to FirstHealth Hospice Foundation 150 Applecross Road, Pinehurst, NC 28374 or a charity of your choice.
