US Congressman. The cousin of Nehemiah Hezekiah Earll, who also served in Congress, he was probably born in Whitehall, Washington County. In 1800 the Earll family relocated to Skaneateles and were among the town's first white settlers. They were involved in several Onondaga County businesses, including farms, a tannery and a distillery. Jonas Earll Jr. was Onondaga County Sheriff from 1815 to 1819. He served in the New York Assembly from 1820 to 1821 and in the State Senate from 1823 to 1827. In 1826 Earll was elected as a Jacksonian to the first of two terms in the US House. He was reelected in 1828 and served from 1827 to 1831. He was then elected to the New York Canal Commission, serving from 1832 to 1840. In 1840 he accepted appointment as Postmaster in Syracuse, serving until 1842. In 1841 he was elected to the Canal Commission for the second time. He was chosen President of the Commission and served from February 1842 until his death.
