Ellensburg Daily Record, 10/6/1966:

John MacArthur

Funeral services were conducted today in St. Matthews Episcopal Church, Bedford, N.Y., for John MacArthur, 43, former Ellensburg resident, who was lost in a fall while claiming 19,000-foot Mt. Mankail in northwest Pakistan Sept. 18.

A search party of experienced American, British and Pakistani mountain climbers was forced to return because of continued heavy snowfall at the 17,000-foot level, where Mr. MacArthur fell as estimated 1,500 feet.

He was equipped only for a one-day climb. It still is undecided whether a search for his body will resume after the weather clears.

. . .

Also surviving are six children who remained in Lahore, Pakistan, while Mrs. MacArthur returned to arrange funeral services in Bedford. She will return soon to Pakistan.

At the time of his death, MacArthur was employed by Harza Engineering Co., of Chicago, as an inspector of hydroelectric projects for the Pakistani government.

Before going to Pakistan, he was employed as an engineer on the Wanapum Dam project at Vantage. The family moved to Ellensburg from northern New York, where MacArthur worked on the St. Lawrence Seaway project.

In Ellensburg, the MacArthurs were active in church and school affairs and as members the Kitties County Chapter of the United Nations Association. Mrs, MacArthur was instrumental in establishing of kindergarten classes in the Ellensburg public schools. The family still owns a home near Menastash Canyon.
