PORTLAND - Genefieve "Jenny" Catherine Baranowski Brennan, died peacefully on September 24, 2013, after six days in hospice at Bodwell House in Brunswick, Maine. A resident of Portland, she was 92.

Jenny was born in the Port City of Elizabeth, New Jersey, on February 15, 1921, and grew up near the harbor, on Court Street. She was the third child of Joseph and Casimira Baranowski, immigrants from Lithuania. Her brothers were Joseph and Bronislav.

A high school athlete, she medaled in swimming and basketball and enjoyed her social experiences in the Pioneer Club. She graduated from Battin High, an all-girls school, 1938.

Jenny worked for a time at a laboratory in a Procter & Gamble plant on Staten Island, testing Camay soap for purity.

In 1943, she married then-Lieutenant (later Captain) James Joseph Brennan,an Army marksmanship instructor (also of Elizbeth), in Crewe, Virginia. During the war, they were stationed variously at Fort Custer in Battle Creek, Michigan; Little Falls, Minnesota; Franklin, Indiana; Shreveport, Louisiana; Abilene, Texas; and twice in Denver, Colorado.

After the war, the couple raised a lively and loving family of five children in Sharon, Pennsylvania; on a farm in Mercer, Pennsylvania; in the Pittsburgh suburb of Mount Lebanon; and later in Worthington, Ohio.

Jenny was a woman of many talents and interests. At various points in her life, she was a potter, watercolor artist, gourmet cook, seamstress, quilt maker, and international folk dancer and event organizer. She also loved auctions and secondhand stores, where she found beautiful antiques and refinished them by hand. Her greatest love was gardening. Her grandchildren remember her potato pancakes, apple pies, and other good cooking.

The couple retired to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, in 1980, where she became a member and officer of the South Carolina Herb Society. They moved to Houston, Texas, in 1988 and to Portland, Maine,in 1994, where Jenny continued her interest in gardening and enjoyed playing bridge. She was an avid basketball and baseball fan well into advanced age.

Jenny is survived by her children - Eileen Seifert (the late Peter) of Chicago, Illinois; Barbara Peraino (Joe) of Golden, Colorado; Christopher Brennan (Cindy) of New Kensington, Pennsylvania; Mary Brennan (George Simonson) of Harpswell, Maine; and Genevieve Hunt (Gregory) of South Dartmouth, Massachusetts - and nine grandchildren.

Jenny and Jim were library readers and lifelong self-educators; they believed in the power of reading and education to change lives. To honor Jenny, please make a donation to your public library.

The Brennan family wishes to express its gratitude to the staffs of 75 State Street, Maine Medical Center, and Bodwell House for their kind and skillful care.

A private burial at Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Augusta, ME, beside her husband, will be held at a later date.
