Miss Nora Abbott Dies at Age 72
Funeral Service Held Here Tuesday Morning
Miss Nora Abbott, housekeeper at the Clifton hotel for 22 years, died at her apartment in Tama; 601 Siegel Street, at 1:30 o-clock Sunday morning, June 22. Death was caused by a heart ailment. She had been in ill health for 20 years suffering from asthma and heart trouble, particularly the past winter. Three weeks ago her condition became more serious, but she was able to be up and around during this time. Saturday, her sister found her in a coma when she went to her bedside shortly after midnight to give her some medicine. She died a short time afterward.
Agnes Lenora Abbott, daughter of Albert Abbott and Anna Green Abbott, was born June 19, 1869, near Hillsboro, Wisconsin, and died June 22, 1941, while a resident of Tama, Iowa, having reached the age of 72 years and three days. Although her Christian name was Agnes Lenora, she was always known as Nora Abbott.
During her childhood she lived at Wonewoc, Wis., and received her schooling there.
When she was 21, in 1890, she moved to Tama with her parents. They farmed south of Tama from 1891 to 1907, when they moved back to Tama.
Miss Abbott cared for her ailing sister, Mrs. Mae Bennett, until her death in 1918. Then she obtained employment as housekeeper at the Clifton hotel in Tama, where her sister, Ida, was working.
Miss Abbott was housekeeper at the Clifton hotel for 22 years. She worked for Dona A. Murdough until 1923, when Robert L. Beale took over the management of the hotel. Then she worked for Mr. Beale until 1936. Since that time she and her sister, Ida have had an apartment together in Tama. The most recent one being in the August Van De Woestyne residence, where Miss Nora died.
Miss Abbott is survived by her sister, Miss Ida Abbott of Tama, and a brother, Charles Abbott, who makes his home at the county farm near Toledo.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Alba Abbott, who died in 1928, and two sisters, Lillian Rose, who died in infancy, and Mrs. Mae Bennett.
Funeral service was held Tuesday morning, June 24, 1941, from Harrison's Funeral Home with Rev. Frank V. Getty in charge. Mrs. Carl B. Harrison sang several selections accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Frank Fowler.
Burial was in Oak Hill cemetery.
