Magdalena Buchner was the second child of Alois (Louis) and Thekla Buchner of Schmidmühlen Germany. Alois and Thekla, and their young son Ludwig, emigrated from Germany to America in 1887. Magdalena Buchner was born in Boston on August 30, 1887 about a month after the family’s arrival. Magdalena was likely named after her father’s mother, Magdalena, as well as her father’s sister, also named Magdalena. Her Aunt Magdalena also lived in Boston, a short distance from where the Alois and Thekla Buchner family first settled. In 1891 the Buchner family moved to Pittsburgh, settling in the Mount Washington section of the city. Little is known of Magdalena’s life other than at the age of six she contacted tuberculosis of the lungs. Her illness lasted for about a year until her passing on 30 June 1894. Magdalena Buchner was buried on 2 July at St. Peter’s Cemetery on Arlington Avenue in Pittsburgh. At the time of Magdalena’s death her family resided on Kramer Way in Mount Washington.
