Joseph D. Fontaine, 33, for 17 years a member of the post office clerical force, died Sunday morning at his home on Chapman Street after an illness of nearly a month from heart trouble. For a week there was little expectation that he would recover, although he showed a slight improvement Saturday. About two years ago he sustained a similar attack and since then his health has not been as good. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph A. Fontaine of this town, and married June 5, 1900, Miss Irma V. Dion of Brattleboro. He leaves his wife, two children, his mother and a sister, Mrs. Eugene Rudden of Springfield.
During his years in the post office, Mr. Fontaine was known for his courtesy and willingness to oblige. He was a lover of outdoor sports, taking great pleasure in hunting and fishing. For many years he had been active in the affairs of the Sportsman's club. He had a keen liking horses and was very rarely without his own.
The funeral was held at Holy Trinity Church yesterday morning, Rev. M. J. Carroll celebrating a requiem high mass. Miss Elizabeth O'Keefe sang "Lead Kindly Light". The bearers were Edward Roberts, James Black of Turners Falls, James A. Coutu, Dr. E. L. Major, Charles Gaudrey and Charles Douville. The At. Jean Baptiste Society of which Mr. Fontaine was a member, attended in a body and acted as escort for the funeral procession. There were many floral tributes, among them being pieces from Mr. Fontaine's associates in the post office and from the St. Jean Baptiste Society. The interment was in Calvary cemetery.
