June was a member of the Congregational Church in Camden, Maine for almost 30 years. She was born and raised in Plainfield, New Jersey and owned a home on Megunticook Lake in Camden, Maine since the 1950's. She moved to Maine in 1986.

June was married to Eugene "Gene" Durkee in 1954. He preceded her in death in 1974. Together they had five children, Eugene "Durk" Durkee III, Mark, Adam, Kim and Lisa.

June, a soprano, studied voice at the Eastman School of Music, graduating with a BA in Voice Performance. While at the school of music, she played Mercedes in "Carmen" with the Metropolitan Opera on tour. During her career, June sang with the Robert Shaw Chorale, City Singers, and Musica Sacra in New York City, performing in venues that included Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher and Carnegie Hall and the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. She taught voice in New Jersey and continued to teach in Maine until she was 85.

She was the daughter of Francis Marmaduke Potter who was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. His father was a dentist. After receiving his preliminary education at public schools in Metuchen, N.J., and at the Rutgers Preparatory School, New Brunswick, N.J., Francis M. Potter attended Rutgers ... In the latter year he became the first Rhodes scholar from Rutgers, representing New Jersey at Christ Church College.
