John Spence was born to Robert Spence and Ann Marsden or Mariston in Philadelphia, PA. His mother came to this country at the age of 14 or 15 from England on a ship named "Delta" in 1850. John was one of 11 children born to Ann and Robert Spence. His siblings who survived infancy are: Robert b.1859, Sarah A. b.1862, Elizabeth (Lizzy) b.1867,Frances Arthur b.1868, Henry Washington b.1870 and Joseph b.1874. John married Annie E. Cheeseman and lived at 216 S. Broadway in Gloucester City. He worked as a "Loom Boss" in a local mill. He and Annie had the following children: Jessie A. b.1892 and died young, Joseph J. b.1895, Ethel Pearl b.1899, Florence May b.1902, Hazel b.1904, Rachel b.1911, James Henry b.1913, Anna E. b.1915.
