Fielding Childress was a social, civic and business leader. He served on the board of the Mercantile Trust Co., Mercantile Commerce Bank and Trust Co., Missouri Portland Cement Co., and the Central Institute for the Deaf. Earlier, he had served on the boards of Laclede Gas Co., Mississippi Valley Barge Line Co., Trailmobile, Inc. and Lincoln engineering. In 1953, Gov. Donnelly appointed him to the St. Louis Board of Police Commissioners. In 1948 he became the president and director of Columbia Transfer Co., a large truck line his father established. The company was sold to Ryder Truck Lines in 1961.

He was a graduate and friend of Westminster College, Fulton Missouri which he enthusiastically supported in several meaningful ways. He was a board member of the St. Louis Symphony and the Opera Theatre of St. Louis.

He died at the family home #3 Hortense Place. Survived by his wife, Ruth McElroy Childress; two daughters and a son.
