Obituary:
Joseph A. Walkes Jr., 72, Leavenworth, passed away on Saturday, March 4, 2006, at Cushing Memorial Hospital in Leavenworth.
Mr. Walkes was born on Nov. 12, 1933, in New York City. His parents were Joseph A. Walkes of the Canal Zone and Unitha Lawrence of St. Lucia, West Indies. His grandfather, Cyril C. Walkes, came from Barbados, West Indies.
He attended schools in New York and graduated from Park College, Parkville, Mo. He served in the United States Army from 1951 until 1973. He then retired and was employed by the U.S. Penitentiary in Leavenworth. Following his retirement from the U.S.P., he was employed at Hoge Barracks on Fort Leavenworth.
Mr. Walkes was extremely active in the Masonic family. He was the founder of the Phylaxis Society, Phyllis Chapter, which is devoted to Prince Hall Masonic research. He was the author of several books on Masonic history. He was a noted lecturer on black history.
He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He and his wife, Jeannette, served two missions for the church, one in Kansas City, Kan., and another in Kansas City, Mo. They also served in the Winter Quarters Nebraska Temple.
He is survived by his wife, Jeannette of Leavenworth; his sons, Michael Joseph of New York, George of North Carolina and Brian and his wife Heidi of Utah; his daughters, Jacqueline and Wenonah of New York; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; his aunt, Elmira Joseph; and many cousins and friends.
Friends may pay their respects from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 9, 2006, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Leavenworth. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 10, 2006, at the same location. Interment will follow at the Leavenworth National Cemetery.
