Detective Carlin, along with his partner responded to a report of burglars in a confectionery store. During their attempt to surround the store, the suspects jumped through the front window of the store. One of the suspects was apprehended while the other ran down the street. Carlin was in pursuit - called out orders to halt - then fired several shots at the suspect.
Several buildings away, a hardware store owner hearing the noise and seeing two men running , opened fire with a rifle. He fired two shots toward Carlin believing him to be the burglar. He died 5 days later from the wounds.
