Yelverton Cowherd, Sr., 79, former general counsel for the United Mine Workers of America, died Tuesday.
Mr. Cowherd, of 3933 Fourth Avenue South, joined District 50 of the United Mine Workers in 1942 as general counsel and moved to Washington, D.C. He returned to Birmingham after retiring in 1963.
Prior to his association with the UMW, he practiced law in Birmingham with Crampton Harris and the late Paul Parsons.
He was a graduate of the George Washington University Law School.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1915 to 1919 and was commander of Birmingham American Legion Gorgas Post in 1932.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Elmwood with Johns-Ridouts directing.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille S. Cowherd, and a sister, Mrs. Frank Stough, both of Birmingham; a son, Yelverton Cowherd, Jr., Germantown, Tenn., and a daughter, Carolyn Elliott, McLean, Va.
