Nicholas Robert Strine, passed away peacefully in Las Vegas at 3 a.m., Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003, from complications of lung cancer. Born Oct. 28, 1930, Nick spent most of his life in Houston. He retired from Texas Commerce Bank as a systems analyst after 24 years and then moved to Las Vegas in 1992. He was an avid fan of automobile racing, classical music and reading. During the Korean War he served as a communications specialist in the U.S. Army Air Corp. Nick was a 47-year member of the Sports Car Club of America. He began as a corner worker, then participated in road rallying, road racing and autocrossing. In 1975 he won 1st place in the C Stock in his 1970 1.8L 914 Porsche at the autocrossing National Solo II Championships in Salina, Kan. In 1970 he began working on his steward license and achieved National Chief Stewart status in 1980. During this time he was regional executive of the San Jacinto (Houston) Region in 1973 and served for many years on their board of directors, also serving as treasurer. Nick was appointed executive steward of the southwest division from 1990-1992, serving as a steward of the meet at the National Road Racing Run-offs for three years. His wife of 25 years, Pat; and his daughter, Nicole Goldman of Houston survive him. A private burial will be in Las Vegas. In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to the American Cancer Society in Nick's name.
